When it comes to a kitchen redesign there are no hard and fast rules as to how you should do things. But there are some very common kitchen design mistakes that could completely ruin the kitchen design you're trying to achieve. Fortunately, these kitchen redesign mistakes are easily avoidable, once you know what they are. As experts in designing and creating the perfect kitchens, we thought we would give you some kitchen design help and show you what mistakes you should avoid making.
Have you ever heard of the kitchen triangle? It's nothing like the Bermuda triangle, don't worry. To imagine your kitchen triangle, the picture where your fridge, cooker, and sink are placed. These are the three most important parts of the kitchen and each makeup on point of your kitchen triangle. You don't want the space between these features to be too big, anything up to about 3 meters is perfect. You also need to make sure the pathway between these features is clear, you don't want any appliances or bins etc, to be blocking the route. This will make using the kitchen much easier and much more practical.
Not providing enough storage in your kitchen redesign
Not providing enough storage in your kitchen redesign
It is so frustrating if you complete your kitchen redesign and realize (once it's too late) that you don't have enough storage. Before you even start your kitchen redesign, you should first look at the storage you currently have available and determine if this is enough. If your current storage is enough, then you will need to at the very least replicate this amount of storage space in your redesign. If you find it is not enough, then now is the time to consider adding more, to make your kitchen design fully functional.
Before you redesign your kitchen think about the work-space you need. Your counter-tops will have appliances on them, limiting the space you have to prepare your meals. And you might also want multiple work paces for those times you host a dinner party or there is more than one person using the kitchen.
Other kitchen redesign mistakes:
- Inadequate Lighting. In the kitchen you must be able to see what you are doing, otherwise, you could end up chopping a finger, instead of a carrot. If you also eat in your kitchen, it might also be a nice idea to add mood lighting to make those special meals full of ambiance.
- Not enough ventilation. If you don't properly ventilate your kitchen you could damage the decoration and the appliances, not to mention smells will linger. You need to consider what ventilation you are going to have and where and then incorporate this into the kitchen redesign.
- Cramming too much into space. Be sensible with the space you have and avoid trying to squeeze in too much. Think about the traffic flow and the spaces you need to keep clear of obstruction. Also, think about needing space to allow doors to open etc. If you can not maneuver around your kitchen, you aren't going to enjoy using it, regardless of how pretty it might look.
- Choosing cabinets and work surfaces based on price. rather than quality. Yes, The price is important, but so is the quality. A high-quality cabinet or work surface will last for years, it will likely be easier to maintain and should look newer for longer. Whereas cheaper surfaces and cabinets will fade and look worn much more quickly, they won’t be as easy to clean or maintain and they will need replacing years sooner than their high-quality equivalents. With this in mind, it’s worthwhile spending a little more now and has a timeless design that you can enjoy for years to come.
